The surf helmet that disappears until you need it.

Low-profile. Built by surfers and engineers from Google, Neuralink, and Wing. Independently certified to the BS EN 1385 white water helmet standard. Engineered for the impact nobody plans for — and the wave you came here to ride.

The Origin

Head injuries are the most ignored risk in surfing. We refused to ignore it.

Every surfer knows someone who's been hit. A fin to the temple. A board to the back of the head. A reef encounter that ended a session — or worse. The lineup quietly accepts it as part of the deal.

We didn't. Surf Skull was started by surfers who also happened to be engineers and designers — people who'd spent careers at Google, Neuralink, and Wing solving problems that didn't have obvious answers. Surf helmets already existed, sure. But not one of them combined an ultra-slim, low-profile bucket-hat design with the protection tech we knew was possible — none used non-Newtonian foam, none built in a rotational slip layer, and none looked like something you'd actually want to wear in the lineup.

So we built the one that didn't exist. Not a kayaking helmet pressed into service. Not a foam shell that looks like a costume. A helmet that respects the wave, the paddle-out, and the way surfers actually want to look in the water.

As Seen On Shark Tank

Five sharks. One pitch. A wave we're still riding.

When we stepped into the Tank, we weren't selling a hat — we were making the case that surfing's safety gap is real, and that good engineering belongs in the water. The response was bigger than we ever expected.

Heads up: new orders may take a few extra days to ship while we catch up. Worth the wait.

Independently Certified

The thinnest surf helmet ever to pass the white water standard.*

Surf Skull V2 is the first Surf Skull to earn certification to BS EN 1385:2012 — the European standard for helmets used in canoeing and white water sports — and as far as we know, the thinnest surf helmet that's ever passed it. An independent, ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab put our helmet through every test the standard demands, in conditions far harsher than a typical surf session: baked at 35°C, frozen to 0°C, soaked in water, and aged under UV. It passed all of them.

It's also one of the only certified helmets you'd actually want to wear all day in the sun — a low-profile bucket-hat shape that shades your face and neck while it protects your skull. We chose this standard because it's one of the only globally recognized benchmarks built specifically for impact protection in moving water.

Impact Protection

Absorbed a 15-joule strike across front, left, and right zones with peak deceleration well under the 250g limit.

Retention Strength

Chin strap held under dynamic load with under 25 mm extension — the helmet stays on when it counts.

Buoyancy

After full water immersion, the helmet floats to the surface — so it surfaces with you, not without you.

Durability & Aging

Tested after artificial UV aging, hot, cold, and water-immersion conditioning — designed to survive sun, salt, and seasons.

What the certification doesn't claim: the standard explicitly notes this helmet is not intended for white water classes 5 and 6. It's a helmet to protect against bumps, scratches, and concussion-class impacts — exactly the surf scenarios it was designed for.

Important Certification currently applies to
the Large (58–60 cm) only.
Other sizes pending certification.

* As far as we know, anyway — we're confident, but we haven't measured every helmet on the market.

Know The Difference

A bump cap is not a helmet.

Most "surf head protection" out there isn't a helmet at all — it's a bump cap. Even our own Version 1 was. A bump cap is a thin shell that'll save you from a fin slice or a scrape on the reef, and that's genuinely useful. But it stops at the surface. When a board comes flying at the back of your head, surface protection isn't the thing standing between you and a concussion. A certified helmet is.

Surface Protection

Our V1 — and most of what's floating around the lineup.

  • Guards against fin cuts, scrapes & lacerations
  • Limited help against concussion-level impacts
  • No rotational-force protection
  • Partial coverage of the skull
  • Not tested or certified to a helmet standard

Surf Skull V2

Everything a bump cap does — and the part that actually matters in a wipeout.

  • Guards against cuts & scrapes, same as a bump cap
  • Non-Newtonian foam hardens on impact to absorb real hits
  • Reeflex slip layer reduces rotational forces
  • Full 360° coverage of the skull — ~15% more than a typical bump cap
  • Independently certified to BS EN 1385:2012
Same low profile. A whole different level of protection.
Inside Version 2

Three engineering breakthroughs. Zero bulk.

V2 is a ground-up rebuild — not a refresh. Every layer rethought for impact, comfort, and the way water actually moves around your head.

01 / REEFLEX

The slip layer that fights concussions

Most head injuries aren't from straight-line impact — they're rotational. Our patent-pending Reeflex plate moves independently inside the shell on impact, dissipating the twisting forces that cause concussions before they reach you.

02 / CUSTOM FOAM

Stronger. Lighter. Quieter on your head.

Our new custom foam absorbs more energy than V1 while shedding weight and bulk. You forget it's there on a two-hour session — until the moment you don't.

03 / HYDRO-FLOW

Engineered for real surf, not a lab.

Reshaped vents and a refined fit system mean water flows through, not against you. Minimal drag on the paddle. No bobbing under the lip. Adjustable for any head, every condition.

Designed To Disappear

A helmet that doesn't announce itself.

Surfers told us they'd wear a helmet if it didn't make them feel like a kook. So we obsessed over the silhouette. Surf Skull sits low like a bucket hat, contours to the head, and reads as part of the kit — not a piece of safety equipment bolted onto a session.

Underneath that low profile is the same protection technology trusted by people who paddle out to reefs that don't forgive mistakes.

Your next session

The wave doesn't ask if you're ready. Be ready anyway.

Surf Skull Version 2 with Reeflex. Built by surfers, engineered by the people who built the things you already trust. Available now in Black, Beige, and Red.
