The Surf Hat that Actually Protects Your Head:

Why Surf Skull Outperforms the Competition

Since we launched Surf Skull in 2023, we’ve noticed a lot of companies trying to duplicate our idea. And, to be clear, we’re flattered. Greater accessibility for surf helmets is a good thing for the sport. It's exactly what we set out to do: make a low-profile surf helmet disguised as a hat that protects your head — one that people will actually want to wear in the lineup.

But there are key differences between our products and other brands that go beyond aesthetics, qualities that could be the difference between escaping a gnarly wipeout unscathed and a trip to the hospital.

First off, let’s look at what the other guys are using.

What’s a bump cap?

A bump cap is a lightweight plastic shell designed to protect against minor impacts and lacerations from sharp objects. Think of it as a scaled-down version of a construction hard hat — lower profile, but also lower protection.

Bump caps work well in tight spaces where you might bonk your head against something hard or sharp. Most brands putting surf helmets in their bucket hats are using bump caps, and honestly, we used to as well — the original Surf Skull was a bump cap design.

The problem is, bump caps stop at surface protection. They'll guard against a fin laceration, but they won't significantly mitigate the risk of concussion when a board comes flying at your head.

While the other guys are still running on our old ideas, we kept innovating. We strived to create a surf helmet that could help protect your brain from concussions, not just cuts.

We created a level of protection, without sacrificing style points, that is unparalleled for a bucket hat.

What sets us apart: the innovation

Since that original prototype, our team of engineers and designers — with backgrounds at companies like Google and Wing — has iterated through two improved models. V1 brought greater impact resistance and more head coverage. Then came V2: our most advanced design yet.

V2 achieves full 360-degree coverage of the skull circumference, which is ~15% more than any bump cap brand on the market. But coverage alone isn't enough — the construction material matters just as much.

Our R&D team tested a range of materials before landing on a non-Newtonian foam as the clear winner. It's lightweight and comfortable in the water, but hardens on impact. It can withstand multiple hits without needing replacement. Whether you're getting worked by a slabby tube or clipped by an errant longboard, your head is absorbing significantly less force than it would with the bump cap helmets of other brands.

We also engineered a two-piece slip layer into the design. This allows the helmet to reduce rotational forces before they reach your brain, adding another layer of protection that all the other guys don't consider.

Don’t just take our word for it

Justine Brink, a South African kitesurfer, foiler, and overall waterwoman badass, has been injured doing action sports in just about every way possible, from broken backs to lacerations to brain bleeds.

She’s been wearing the helmet during her sessions and reports that she’s already gotten her money’s worth of head protection.

“It’s not super hard and bulky like other (surf helmets) — it’s flexible but also super strong,” Brink said. “My board hit me on the head the other day while kiting, and I literally didn’t feel a thing.”

Brink has been digging how the helmet blends into the bucket hat.

“What got me at first was the look, the fact that you look like you're just wearing a bucket hat for protection from the sun, but it’s actually a surf helmet that protects your head as well. That was my selling point,” she said. “So many of my kiting friends have complimented how sick it looks without even realizing it’s a helmet.”

Style and protection aren’t the only perks Brink has noticed.

“I really love how Surf Skull made it for the surfers and watersports addicts. I’ve seen a lot of bucket hat helmets where the brim is too big,” she explained. “You can’t possibly be duck diving comfortably and riding while you have a hat falling in your face the whole time.

“My noggin is protected. No more calling my mom from the hospital.”

When It Comes to Head Protection, Don't Compromise

So, if protecting your head is a priority in the water, keep this in mind when making your purchase decision. Not all surf helmets are created equal.

In summary, we’ve engineered a helmet with cutting-edge material and design that protects more of your head, absorbing more impact, than the competition. And no one will even notice it’s a helmet.

If you're going to protect your head, do it right.

See you in the lineup.
